The Hannibal passage with elephants through the Moncenisio pass (it linked Valle Susa with Valle Durance) is very famous.
Also Julius Caesar in 58 B.C. crossed this pass during his 8 days journey from Rome to Geneva.
Then he decided to build a more suitable road: the "Via Cottia per Alpem" which started from Torino and passed through Susa,(Segusium) Oulx (Villa Martis), Cesana (Gadaone or Gaesao) and reached the dangerous throats of Claviere.
This road remained a simple mule-track during the Middle Ages until the napoleonic period. Here was born the village of Claviere (Las Clavieras in the Middle Ages)
